Lagos - the "White City" on the Atlantic and at the mouth of the Rio Bensafrim, is one of the oldest cities in the Algarve. The Romans called her Lacóbriga, and she was temporarily named Zawaia by the Moors. Under Henry the Navigator, it became one of the most important port cities in the region, the neo-modern caravels were conceived here, built and then used for world conquest, making Portugal's supremacy in international maritime trade possible.
