Praia da Luz literally means ‘The Beach of Light’. This was the name given to the village in Moorish times, when beacons were lit to warn fishermen of the approaching danger from the savage Moors. It has a 17th Century coastal fort at one end of the beach, which is now a restaurant; and the famous ‘black rock’ (Rocha Negra) cliff at the other. This is an intrusion of lava produced from the volcanoes of Monchique some 190 million years ago. Between the two landmarks is the beach, which is family friendly and has a life guard in the summer months. There is an attractive promenade for strolling or relaxing on one of the many seats and there are some Roman remains accessed from the middle of the promenade. For such a small town there is an incredible selection and variety of restaurants, cafés and snack bars. There is also a night club on the seafront. There are some lovely shops for souvenirs and local arts and crafts. Even though the town has been developed into a tourist town, the atmosphere of an old fishing village is still present.

Beaches
| There are more than 100 sandy beaches hugging the coast of the Algarve, 70 of which have been credited with the distinguished blue flag award. The beaches have clean water and most are easily accessed. Some of the more remote beaches on the west coast require 4x4 and have few or no facilities.
